Electricity

Electricity on all three islands is 110 volts/60 Hz, the same voltage as North America.

Gas

Bottled gas is used for cooking in many homes and is available from Home Gas Ltd., Grand Cayman, at CI.75 per 100-pound cylinder.

Water

Desalinated water is supplied too much of Grand Cayman and the western end of Cayman Brac. The water is piped in and drinkable.

Some of the outlying districts rely on cistern and well water, supplemented by trucked in water from private companies.

Public water supplies are provided by two companies, The Water Authority, and Cayman Water Company. Both provide desalinated water.

Trucked Water

Three private water-trucking services distribute water to various parts of Grand Cayman.

The trucking companies purchase water from the Water Authority's Red Gate Water Works facility in George Town as well as from the authority's East End groundwater facility.

The Cayman Water Company also provides trucked water on Grand Cayman from its facility on West Bay Road. Trucked water in Grand Cayman can vary from CI to CI per 1,000 gallons, depending on the source of supply and the destination.

Telecommunications

Cable & Wireless (Cayman Islands) Ltd. has provided the Cayman Islands with telecommunications services since 1966. And, in 1996 the Cayman Islands were granted their own area code, 345.

Cable & Wireless Ltd. Incorporates state-of-the-art fully digital telecommunications services by highly skilled technicians to all three islands using a fully digital network built with fiber optic cables.

Their telecommunications system provides reliable links with the rest of the world, satisfying the business and financial community's expanding needs.

International direct dialing from the Islands was introduced in 1983 and is connected to over 200 countries through state of the art fiber optic cables.

Top of the line phone, telefax, and high speed internet services along with facsimile transmission, Cell phone, Internet (ADSL & dial-up) and mobile services as well as database services are also provided on every island.

Application forms are available on-line or at the Residential Sales Office in the Anderson Square Building, Shedden Road, George Town, or at the Business Sales Office in SafeHaven, Leeward Three, West Bay Road.

For Cayman Brac, application forms are available at Stake Bay as well as on-line.

RESIDENTIAL : All customers must complete and sign the residential application form and return to Cable & Wireless via fax or post, with a copy of passport attached.

All your favorite networks are available in the Cayman Islands.

There are four local television stations (CAT, CATN/TV-30, CITN and its sister-station CTS), providing you with all the local news sports, and weather.

Some Apartment Complexes include cable in the rental fee. Ask your agent to secure this information for you.

If cable service is not provided the monthly fees are approximately
CI$ 65.00-75.00 depending on the package you prefer.

• Cable is .95 per month for one cable box. Additional cable boxes are CI per month. This does not include pay per view options. There are 4 movie channels, 2 sports channels, and all the networks. An additional 4 channel package is offered at an additional a month.
• Some condo complexes offer discounted cable because the service is sometimes included in the owner's monthly maintenance fees.
• Some units now offer satellite TV with the tenants choosing their own packages. This usually gives you about 60 channels starting at around per month.

Radio

The government-owned Radio Cayman is now in its 23rd year of operation. Its broad programming format includes educational, religious, cultural, and entertainment programs.

The station operates 24 hours, seven days per week, from studios in Broadcasting House, George Town.

There are two broadcast services: Radio Cayman I broadcast on Grand Cayman at 89.9Fm 3KW and 1205 AM 1KW, on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, on 93.9FM 3KW. Radio Cayman II broadcasts on 105.3FM 5KW on Grand Cayman and on 91.9FM 3KW in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

Nine newscasts are broadcast on weekdays, seven on Saturdays, and five on Sundays. Included in the programming are audience participation programs and live remote coverage of significant events that take place in the Islands, such as the state opening of the Legislative Assembly and, the Queen's birthday parade.

Delayed broadcasts of the entire days proceedings of the legislature are available every evening when in session. These broadcasts play an important role in keeping the people in touch with the government.

Radio ICCI-FM, a non-commercial, training station operated by students studying radio at the International College of the Cayman Islands, has been on the air since 1973. Its signal can be heard over much of Grand Cayman. Broadcasting hours are from 1 to 11 p.m. weekdays and 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. on weekends. Programming includes classical and popular music, community-oriented news, and religious programs. The studio is on the college campus at Newlands, and broadcasts at 101.1 FM.

Z99.9FM began broadcasting in 1992. The station broadcasts 24 hours daily, featuring local and international news and a 24-hour contemporary music format that attracts a younger demographic.

Importing Your Personal Belongings - Customs

When taking up residence in the Cayman Islands, personal belongings moved within your first six months of residence are not subject to duty, with the following provisions:

• All imported used personal belongings that are over 6 months old, including computers, household goods and furniture (proof of purchase date may be required)

Cayman Customs

As a resident returning to the Cayman Islands each person is allowed to bring in CI0 of new goods tax free. If the value of the goods you are bringing into the Cayman Islands exceeds CI0, you will be charged a 20% fee.

Importing Pets

In order to bring a family pet or other animal into the Cayman Islands you will need to contact the Department of Agriculture on Tel: 345 945-2267 Fax: 345 949-4932 for import papers and requirements.

Anyone intending to bring a family pet or other animal into the islands must direct these inquiries to the Department of Agriculture.

An import permit or valid animal passport issued by the Department of Agricultural, and an official health certificate issued by a government employee or accredited veterinary inspector in the country of origin is required for the importation of dogs and cats.

Applications should be submitted in advance of travel and must be accompanied by a non-refundable fee of CI (US) in the form of a bank draft or an international money order, payable to the Cayman Islands Government.

Importing fruits or plants

To bring in fruit or plants to the island you will be required to produce a permit from the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture and a
phyto-sanitary certificate issued by the relevant government department in the country of origin.

Please note that if the permit and phyto-sanitary certificate are not produced the fruit or plants will be destroyed/confiscated.

Health Care

Cayman enjoys a high standard of general and specialized medical services both through the Government and privately.

Through its Public Health Department, the Government also runs Health Centers in each of the districts, and conducts health programs including immunization, genetics and nutrition. The Government also operates clinics providing dental and eye care services.

A broad range of specialists, including visiting doctors, private dentists and optometrists from the US and elsewhere, operate from private clinics offering a variety of services.

There are no endemic tropical diseases, and the Islands are non-malarial. The Mosquito Research and control Unit (MRCU) operate a highly successful program involving chemical and physical control methods, reducing the amount of mosquitoes to tolerable levels.

A mandatory health insurance law became effective on July 1st, 1997. This requires all residents to have minimum private sector health insurance to cover basic medical expenses. The premium is shared evenly between the employee and employer.

Schools

The Government of the Cayman Islands provides free schooling for Caymanian children 4-16 years old, and achieves a 90% literacy rate.

The public schools are based upon the British educational system, with primary schools (4-11 year olds) in each district, two Government high schools (11-16 year olds), a community college and a law school in George Town. Cayman Brac has three primary schools and a high school, providing full education for 5-16 year olds. There is also a private day-care centre.

Both high schools follow the CXC (Caribbean Exchange Council) curriculum, roughly equivalent to the British GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education).

In addition to the CXC, the high schools offer a range of other external examinations to meet all ability levels. These include IGCSE (the international version of the GCSE), Pitman's, and City and Guilds.

The community college offers a wide range of vocational training geared to local needs (business, tourism, hotel administration, building trades for example) as well as GCSE Advanced Level Examination ("A" Levels) and associate's degree in a variety of majors. It also offers recreational courses, including evening classes.

The law school, founded in 1991, offers a three-year Bachelor of Laws degree in conjunction with the University of Liverpool (UK), as well as a five-year attorney-at-law course, and a Diploma in Legal Studies.

The government also provides facilities for special education, training for the disabled and a school for juvenile offenders.

Private Education

In addition to Cayman's Government schools, there is a wide variety of other educational establishments. All pre-school education remains in the private sector, although there are three pre-schools run by the National Council of Voluntary Organizations (NCVO) in George Town, Bodden Town and East End.

Private schools are regulated and inspected by the Government's School Inspectorate.
International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) is a non-profit school that focuses on business education and office administration. Located in Savannah, Grand Cayman, ICCI, founded in 1970, is affiliated with several universities in the US. It offers degrees, including Masters', and diploma courses in accounting, banking, business administration, secretarial skills and other subjects.
